Double Deep Pallet Rack is a high-density warehouse storage system where pallets are stored two positions deep on each side of the aisle, rather than the single row used in standard selective racking. This configuration allows two pallets to be placed front-to-back in the same bay, effectively doubling storage density within the same footprint.
Key characteristics:
- Increased storage capacity – Maximizes cubic space by reducing the number of aisles needed compared to selective racking.
- Reach truck required – Because pallets sit two deep, a standard forklift can't access the rear pallet directly; a reach truck or deep-reach forklift with extending forks is needed to retrieve it.
- LIFO (Last In, First Out) – Since the front pallet must be removed before accessing the one behind it, this system typically follows a LIFO inventory flow, making it best suited for SKUs with high quantities per pallet and lower rotation needs.
- Space efficiency – Reduces aisle space requirements by up to 50% compared to selective rack, since fewer aisles are needed to access the same number of pallet positions.
- Best for – Bulk storage of uniform, slower-moving products, cold storage facilities, and operations where floor space is at a premium.
Trade-off: While it boosts storage density, double deep racking offers lower selectivity — you can't access every pallet position independently — so it's less ideal for businesses needing frequent, random access to varied SKUs.
